Autumn Term in Year 2

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back to term 2. We hope you all enjoyed a well-deserved rest? Our topic this term is Sail away! This has a geography focus and we are looking forward to following the amazing voyage of Jessica Watson, who at only 16 years old, sailed solo around the world. The children will be reliving Jessica’s journey by reading newspaper articles, watching interviews and writing their own recounts and information texts as we travel with her around the world. We will be becoming journalists as we gather, plan, prepare and deliver interviews that capture Jessica’s highs and lows of being at sea alone. We will also be including water safety and exploring resources from the RNLI. This topic offers cross curricular links for all our other subjects.

For topic, we will be learning all about the route Jessica took (210,000 nautical miles) in her bright pink sailing boat, named Ella’s pink lady. Beginning our journey in Sydney and heading east, following her path across the different oceans to discover interesting facts and information as we go.

In art, the children will be exploring the incredible works of Monet and Turner as we focus on texture, light and brushstrokes to create our own interpretations of sea landscapes as we travel over the different oceans.

In computing the children will be developing their computational concepts of decomposition and abstraction by creating code for digital postcards sent from locations we visit.

In science we will be exploring marine and ocean habitats of the animals and sea creatures that live and survive in the various oceans.

And in Maths we will be initially focusing on addition and subtraction, whilst also stepping into multiplication as we count forwards and backwards in 2’s and 10’s.

The children will all be sitting the mandatory Phonics Screening this month, this will take place week beginning 22nd November. We will continue to teach and recap phase 4 & 5 sounds alongside phase 6 where we are teaching high frequency and common exception words, contractions, compound words and the use of comma’s. We will also be continuing with the weekly spelling quiz. Finally, our reading book changing days will still be Mondays and Thursdays, so please continue to read daily with your child or at a minimum of 3 times per week, and our PE session will still take place on a Tuesday afternoon with Allsorts.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to come and find a member of the team.
